Dr. Anthony Downs specialises in skin cancer prevention and treatment as well as cosmetic procedures. He is a Consultant Dermatologist at the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Trust Hospital and skin cancer lead clinician for Exeter. Dr Downs was formerly the clinical director of the South West regional NHS laser centre, located at the Exeter Nuffield. He now leads the new Medical Lasers service, based at Exeter Medical, providing treatment to both NHS and private patients across the south west.

After graduation from Guys hospital, University of London, with both BSc (Hons) in Experimental Pathology and his degree in medicine (MBBS), his dermatology training was at the University of Bristol Dermatology unit. During his training he participated in research, publishing medical papers and lecturing nationally and internationally.

His appointment as a Consultant Dermatologist in Exeter allows him to continue to be involved not only in managing patients but also in research, (particularly in laser medicine, psoriasis and skin cancer) and the teaching and training of medical students and GPs in dermatology.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a member of the British Association of Dermatologists, a member of the British Society of Dermatological Surgeons and an executive member of the British Laser Study Group. He is a tutor and examiner for GPs taking the International Diploma of Dermatology.

Dr. Downs is also an International Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and is trained in the delivery of cosmetic fillers and botulinum toxin injections.

For appointments regarding, general dermatology, skin cancer and allergy, a GP referral letter is preferred. A consultation with your GP is not always necessary to obtain this.

For appointments regarding mole checks and cosmetic concerns of the skin, IPL treatments and follow-up consultations, a GP letter is not normally required.
